Kandrea fell uncharacteristically silent as she stood before Damon Clyde. Good lord above, he was a handsome man. Not the sissy GQ type by a long shot, but rugged and earthy. The kind of man who, had he lived back in the Stone Age, would have had no trouble hunting meat for the clan and dispatching predators from the cave.

She swallowed a bit roughly, the dry lump in her throat feeling the size of a softball. He looked especially good today in a pair of jeans and a basic black T-shirt. She could easily see the delineation of his honed biceps rippling beneath the cotton fabric. He was a tall, solid, reassuring presence in a world that was anything but.

She could sense that, despite Damon’s glowering, the magnetism that drew her to him like a moth to a flame wasn’t one-sided. There was a burning in his eyes, a desire that was at odds with his gruff stance and surly frown.

Kandrea glanced away, doing her best to shrug off the odd attraction. They were an unlikely match. Too dissimilar. While opposites may attract, she supposed they rarely stayed together.

She forced herself to resume eye contact, though the yearning to bolt away was fairly overwhelming. “You promised me this wouldn’t happen,” she said crisply.

He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He stared at her for a suspended moment, then shook his head and looked away.

She was accustomed to this sort of thing, to people not knowing how to react when confronted with the truth of her psychic abilities. For some reason her lack of normalcy embarrassed her this time, a small part of her having hoped that Damon Clyde would react differently than the average Joe.

“How did you know?” he asked softly, surprising her.

“I—”

She tried to respond, but the next thing Kandrea knew she was being led at the elbow into the kitchen. Damon pulled her alongside him, then twirled her around to look at him as soon as they reached his destination. His face was gruff, his stance like a caged panther. She wasn’t certain what to make of his contradictory behavior and, unfortunately, her intuition wasn’t talking.

“You’re driving me crazy,” Damon gritted out, his jaw tense.

She was driving him crazy? Because she had been able to accurately predict the future, she supposed. Disappointed in him whether or not she had a right to be, she snatched her arm from his grasp and turned on her heel to leave. Large, strong hands seized her from behind and pulled her back.

“Let go of me!” Kandrea fumed, spinning around to face him. “What the hell do you want from me? An apology for who I am?” She realized how vulnerable she sounded and hated herself for it. Forcing the helpless girl inside her at bay, the tough woman she was took over. “It isn’t going to happen.”

“Kandrea—”

“Let. Me. Go.”

“No.”

“Then I’ll fire you.”

“I don’t care.”

One second she was on the ground antagonistically staring up at him, and a heartbeat later she was plucked from her feet and pressed hard against him.
